Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) is recognized every September by childhood cancer organizations around the world.
With a goal to increase awareness and raise funds for those affected by childhood cancer, the American Childhood Cancer Organization encourages everyone to Go Gold® during September in honor and in memory of kids with cancer!
-43 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer every day.
-Worldwide, about 400,000 children and adolescents develop cancer each year, only half of whom are diagnosed.
-Nearly 10% of children with cancer develop the disease because they inherited a genetic mutation.
-More than 95% of childhood cancer survivors will have significant chronic health issues.
Oral cancer includes cancers of the mouth and the back of the throat. Oral cancers develop on the tongue, the tissue lining the mouth and gums, under the tongue, at the base of the tongue, and the area of the throat at the back of the mouth.
Oral cancer accounts for roughly three percent of all cancers diagnosed annually in the United States, or about 53,000 new cases each year.
Oral cancer most often occurs in people over the age of 40 and affects more than twice as many men as women. Most oral cancers are related to tobacco use, alcohol use (or both), or infection by the human papilloma virus (HPV). www.nidcr.nih.gov

Cancer of the tube that runs from the throat to the stomach (esophagus).
Smoking and poorly controlled acid reflux are significant risk factors for esophageal cancer.
Symptoms include trouble swallowing, unintentional weight loss, chest pain, worsening indigestion or heartburn, and coughing or hoarseness.
Treatment focuses on removing the cancer through surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation also may be used.
Cancer in the male organs that make male hormones and sperm (testicles).
The testicles are located inside a loose bag of skin (scrotum) underneath the penis.
Symptoms include a lump in either testicle and a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum.
Treatments include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Head and neck cancer is a general term used by doctors. It describes the diverse group of malignant tumors that can occur in the head and neck region. Examples include: laryngeal cancer, mouth cancer, nasal cavity and sinus cancer, salivary gland cancer, skin cancer, throat cancer, thyroid cancer, tongue cancer
The typical treatment for head and neck cancer is surgery. Some tumors can be removed with minimally invasively procedures. These include laser microsurgery, robotic approaches, and Mohs surgery.
Among the most effective treatments for head and neck cancer are intensity-modulated radiation therapy and proton therapy. These specialized approaches can help prevent side effects, including those that affect your ability to eat or swallow. www.mskcc.org
Colon cancer forms inside the large intestine, which is about five and a half feet long. The first five feet of the large intestine is called the colon. The rectum makes up the last six inches. Cancers found in the two organs are often grouped together as colorectal cancer. Colon cancer typically starts as a small abnormal growth on the inner lining of the colon. This is called a polyp, and it can grow into cancer. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States. More than 97,000 people in the United States are newly diagnosed with colon cancer each year. www.mskcc.org
Kidney cancer is different from many other cancers. You may not notice any symptoms as the disease develops. For most people, it goes unnoticed for years. Many people only find out they have kidney cancer when a doctor is examining them for another condition. For example, if someone is having gallbladder surgery, the doctor may order imaging of the abdomen (belly). The kidney cancer shows up in the imaging. www.mskcc.org
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that arises from a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells originate in the bone marrow and play an important role in the immune system.
Multiple myeloma develops when a normal plasma cell changes into a myeloma cell. These are cancerous cells that can multiply uncontrollably. A normal plasma cell becomes cancerous because of changes in the bone marrow or changes in a cell’s DNA (genetic mutations). www.mskcc.org
An estimated 11,980 people living in the United States were diagnosed with Gallbladder cancer in 2021, according to data from the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
